Heritage Question Time #1

Is there a burning question you have about the history of Berwick, Tweedmouth or Spittal? Questions submitted by the public to a panel of three people who, between them, hoped the had the answers: Berwick Archivist, Linda Bankier; local historian, Jim Herbert; and buildings historian, Dr Catherine Kent.

The Battle of Halidon Hill

The Great Siege of Berwick-upon-Tweed culminated in the Battle of Halidon Hill fought to the north of the town on 19th July, 1333. This conflict pitted a newly enthroned Edward III of England against a mighty Scottish host. In this online event, local historian Jim Herbert talks about the circumstances that led to the Scottish Wars of Independence and discusses the details and outcome of this most significant of battles. There is a question and answer session at the end.

Berwick Archives Revealed

Berwick has a wonderful collection of Borough Archives which are still kept in the town and give a great insight into its fascinating history. Berwick Archivist, Linda Bankier in this online talk delved into the archives. This talk brought the town's history to life through the fascinating stories in the archives. Fought over by the English and Scots, Berwick has been described as "Twixt Thistle and Rose" - a little kingdom in the middle which is a Place by Itself.
